You may get this twice, if so, apologies!

Why do you write noodling (I love it!) is this a Mary Louisa word or is used generally in the US?

Steam punk and cyber punk, please explain these in your context, yes, I know I could look it up- but it's not the same...

Thanks,.

noddle the way I used it is an informal kind of slang when used as a verb (initially meant "to play on an instrument in a casual manner."

But, recently it is used to describe playing around in any fashion. Here is how one dictionary defined it "to improvise, experiment, or think creatively:

The writers noodled for a week and came up with a better idea for the ad campaign."

cyberpunk def: "a genre of science fiction set in a lawless subculture of an oppressive society dominated by computer technology." My husband I also liked punk rock that came out at the same time in the 80s, so not surprising I liked this kind of science fiction as well.

Steampunk definition: "a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy featuring advanced machines and other technology based on steam power of the 19th century and taking place in a recognizable historical period or a fantasy world."

This sub-genre usually set in Victorian England. I've never been a big fan (maybe because my historical fiction is set in that period so it is hard for me not to be critical.

Thank you so much!

At the age of 77 I am, of course, not as au fait as our children or grandchildren are with current slang or banter but don't think we use noodling here in the UK- indeed am a little hard pressed to think what we would say instead of noodling as in the example you gave- I have to check with ny 24 year old grandson I think...!!
