What I could discover was this was a tradition among the poor to save space? But I don't know how prevalent this was.

Wow, what an interesting read! Born and raised in the Netherlands, and having spent so many years now in the US, I’m always fascinated by the history of this country. Learning that Christmas didn’t become an official national holiday until 1875 truly blew my mind! Thank you so much for sharing this and your other wonderful pieces.
