Amen to all this.

We were worried because our lawn maintenance man did not show up last Thirsday when he said he'd come by to take care of a dying tree. We didn't know if he had been swept up (like debris on the steert!) and disappeared. Thankfully, he showed up yesterday and was fine.

But anyone can disappear these days.

Anger and frustration is also building in the Midwest, although slowly in the deep blue area where I live.

I agree with everything in your post and am continously disgusted with what's going on throughout our country. When Kamala was running, she discussed that there wouldn't be any guardrails in place to stop Trump and his groupies from his blatant and brutal attacks on immagration, Federal programs, etc.

The fact that many of the Republicans in Congress and the Senate that are paid by their constituents are not protecting our Constitution at all is extremely disturbing for me. Some people who voted for Trump are saying "this isn't what I voted for!". Wow, really? What did they really expect? With the entire world knowing Trump's criminal background, that's just a ridiculous statement.

I basically stopped watching CNN when Jim Acosta resigned at the end of his last show on Jan 28, 2025 and follow him, Robert Reich, Dan Rather and many others on Substack.

Brava, Lou!

I remember looking out the window of the funeral home's black limo on the way to a Southern Indiana cemetery. The service over, we were on our way to bury my dad, his flower-draped coffin in the hearse ahead of us. And I thought, "How is it possible that the stores are open, people shopping and going on as if nothing has happened?" The shock and anger you feel is similar. Somehow everything is going on as if our country isn't dying as we watch, being taken over by an authoritarian regime unbelievably supported by millions of MAGA types. The anger and sadness we feel are profound.

So well said.

What I find so disturbing -- although not surprising -- about the assault of Senator Padilla is that NO Republican Senators have expressed concern or upset about what happed to their fellow Senator.

Of course, neither do Republicans appear to find it a problem that ICE is going into elementary schools, hospital emergency rooms, farm fields, courts and sweeping up seamstresses, school children, green card holders, American citizens and college students who had the audacity to write op-eds the administration dislikes. (Without a criminal gang member in sight.) These are issues everyone should be concerned about, not a partisan Democrat or Republican (or Independent) one.

Although I read fiction -- mostly historical fiction -- as a respite from current events, that is not to say that history can provide us with lessons that are as valuable now as in the past.

We look on from other countries with sadness at seeing the move from democracy to ? Has happened so quickly. What is worse. The story of the Senator got around the world and horrified us. Not allowed to ask a question? Then that is no longer a Press conference and is a statement?

Is this the end?
