Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1311:
Once again, I spent an hour or two yesterday morning editing, even sitting in the sun. But two long phone calls, one scheduled, the other rather an emergency, pretty much filled up the afternoon. As a result, didn’t make much progress. I am still dithering with making changes to the opening. Figuring out how to drop in enough back story to orient people who haven’t read the previous books in a while, is always difficult.
Today, as expected, it is cloudy, still promising at least rain showers off and on tomorrow, and definitely cooler. And I have my regular noon zoom meeting, then a phone call after the meeting, so maybe an hour this morning and an hour this afternoon to work.
Meanwhile, since its clearly going to take some time to get this manuscript off my plate, I thought I would see if those of you missing the people in the O’Farrell Street boarding house would enjoy reading or rereading the early short stories as part of this newsletter. I thought I might experiment by starting to put up the very first short story, Dandy Detects, with a little background on how I came to write it and the important role it played in my success as and indie author. This would give more variety to the daily newsletter. To help me assess whether this would be of interest to any of you, could you take the following poll.
Here is another cute stone and flowers I found on one of my walks!
