Daily Diary, Day 876:
“It’s My Birthday,” and for some reason, as I wrote this, I heard the Leslie Gore lyrics to “It’s my Party, and I’ll cry if I want to” in my head. Just looked this up, the song came out in 1963---sixty years ago. Anyway, I don’t think I will want to cry on this, my 73rd birthday, but I’ve just decided doing whatever “I want to do” is a nice present to myself.
So, I am going to skip reading the news, (read the headlines already), I am going to put off trying to catch up on substack or other social media posts, I am only going to take one phone call—the one the one I have scheduled with my daughter after lunch, and I am going to refrain from doing any additional cleaning or laundry.
And, so as not to make this a list of only what I’m not going to do, I am going to have some special chocolate-flavored tea this morning, and I am going to walk for an entire 60 minutes, feet willing, and I am going to get 1000 words written because that will make me very, very happy.
I think that the fact that I’m having trouble coming up with anything else “special” that I want to do is probably a good sign that most days I really am doing exactly what I want. Therefore, I am also going to feel gratitude for that fact and gratitude for all of you out there who have been sending me happy birthday wishes.
Now, off to have that chocolate-flavored tea and continue writing!
Happy Birthday to a fellow Aquarian! I will be 60 on Saturday, the same age as the Leslie Gore's song. I enjoy your column and it's given me many ideas for managing my retirement in a few years. I am not a writer, but I plan to do more needle-art projects. Reading your columns has made me think more about setting mini-goals and how useful that will be. I'm also looking forward to your next San Francisco book! I hope you enjoy your day!
Happy Birthday
