Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1487:
Busy morning, with ordering and putting away groceries, cleaning, and first walk of the day. And we slept in until 6 (usually awake by 5), so morning started later than usual.
Yesterday I finally got contacted about scheduling my surgery on the trigger finger on my right hand…November 19. Evidently stiches then get taken out 2 weeks later, then a follow-up phone call from surgeon a month after that. All now scheduled. This should give me plenty of time to get the draft to the science fiction, edited one more time, and then out to beta readers.
Also got the part to the fridge, so I hope on Wednesday the repair person will actually show up and install and we will in good shape. However, I didn’t order as many vegies today as I usually do today, so less chance of them going bad. But there should be enough for my lovely salads up through Weds.
There is an airshow – the Blue Angels—today and tomorrow. The base is pretty directly east of us, and for the past few days they’ve been practicing. Shaking the house, setting off fire alarms, and getting our dog very excited. I will try to get a photo of her barking at them. She clearly feels she is defending us. I confess that the fact that decades ago one of the aircraft crashed just a few miles east of us (and we actually saw it as it flew overhead, just about roof top level) leveling a house and killing a woman only a few houses away from where a colleague lived, means that I am not all that happy about being in their flight path.
Writing is going slow, but steady. About 500 written words yesterday, and today no phone calls to get in the way.
I hope if any of you were in the path of the hurricane or its windy rainy aftermath, you are all doing ok and have power back on. There was a face book meme that said waiting for a hurricane was like being stalked by a turtle. I thought his was such a good description. We haven’t lived anywhere where hurricanes are frequent, but when my parents lived in W. Palm Beach (and were so traumatized by two hurricanes in a row that they moved to the Pacific NW) watching the news from here in the west and worrying about them, really was stressful.
My, between air crashes and hurricanes, this post got dark! So let me turn to our San Diego weather. It was cold enough when I started on my walk (61 degrees) that I put on a heavier hoodie, but now it’s sunny—which is much earlier than it’s been—and warming up nicely. And here are some lovely roses in the yard across the street!

These are some of my favorite type of roses. Thank you for sharing your pic! Good to hear that your household is getting back in shape. I forgot to mention that I like your new water dispenser, Quite lovely! We have huge military helicopters flying very low after dark over the house. These are new pilots practicing. UGH! As much as I wish we were not on their flight path, I wish even more that they would not fly over what is left of our ancient forests. And yet, I am glad for our remarkable military keeping in shape for whatever they may be needed for. Life is so darn complicated, isn't it.
Glad to hear that you’re getting the finger repaired, but I expect that will be quite uncomfortable. Beautiful roses!
