Weekly Writing Intentions: October 22, 2022
Daily Diary, Day 781: Weekly Writing Intentions
Overall, it was a good week, in part because it felt balanced between work, seeing and talking to friends, and getting some book promotion stuff done. I didn’t get much more written yesterday. However, knowing I knew already made my 5000 a week goal, meant I felt I could reread the sections in the trilogy written from the snowcat Silence’s point of view. I needed to refresh my memory of how she described things like the moon, different people, etc. to recapture her voice. With this, I will feel more confident today as I go forward in the chapter I am currently writing. As a result, the total for the week is 5616 and I have slightly over 61,000 words written.
My goal for next week is to finish the chapter I am on, and then outline as much of the rest of the book as I can. I can already tell that there are some minor and major plot threads that I will need to leave to fully develop and finish in a second book, if I don’t want this one to get way too long—which I don’t.
This means it is time to figure out which plot threads I need to have a satisfactory ending for in this book, and which ones can be held over to the next book. This is why I want to see if I can get main outline sketched out before I write anymore, and it could be this will take up much of the week.
When I wrote Under Two Moons, the second book in this series, I held up publishing it until I was almost ready to publish book three, Through Ddaera’s Touch. As a result, they were published within a month of each other. I may need to do this again. In terms of writing, this worked well because there was no break between writing each book, and as a result, all the elements were still very fresh in my mind. (No having to do what I did yesterday to remind myself of a character’s voice, etc.)
For readers, it meant that while there was a satisfactory resolution to one of the main plot threads in book two, I could leave some threads hanging because the reader could immediately get the next book, where pretty much everything else was resolved.
But I need to think about this. Last time, I didn’t have that many people who had read the first book, so I didn’t feel there were a whole lot of people waiting impatiently for books 2 and 3.
Well, I don’t have to make this decision now.
As for everything else in my life, same old goals. Getting at least 90 mins of exercise each day, listen to my podcast and audiobooks, watch some fun TV with my husband in the evenings, talk to friends and family on the phone.
Today, between my walk and deep cleaning of the downstairs I’ve already been on my feet walking or cleaning for over two hours! So at least that part of my day is done.
The photos for today are of my one rose bush. First is one of the three tight buds I was afraid the heat would blast. They survived, but the went from buds to full bloom, with petals about to fall, in one day, which I guess was its reaction to the heat.
