Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1282:
I wish I could say that I woke up this morning and everything was fine in terms of my health and well-being, but nope. The right index finger and in fact, the whole hand, is again swollen and sore this morning, I assume from the general manipulation of it yesterday as it was being checked out. As a result, I’m not even going to clean this morning and will resist doing anything with that hand until I get the splint which should help me keep from re-injuring it. The splint is supposed to arrive today. (In case you’re wondering, I am dictating this post and making corrections with my left hand.)
The eye is somewhat better, in that the general swelling is down, but the actual stye itself is larger and continues to obscure my vision. So as the doctor I saw yesterday recommended, I have sent off an email with a picture to the ophthalmologist asking whether I should make an appointment to have it looked at and perhaps lanced.
In short, I’ve done what I can for now, and the rest of the day, I need to concentrate on protecting the finger and not getting frustrated about the things that I can’t do. I am not very good at asking for help so this is also a day when I am trying to work on asking my husband to do things that are probably not good for the hand. So already this morning I’ve had to ask him to fill up the water jug and open up a bottle. He is always good about doing whatever I ask him to do, the problem is my discomfort in asking.
Yesterday, I did have a good second walk as well as a good late afternoon phone call. But I confess by the time I was finished with dinner I was in a fair amount of pain and very tired. Today it is actually supposed to start raining after lunch so my goal is to have a morning walk and then perhaps a second walk before lunch since that may be the last chance until tomorrow.
I do have one a phone call scheduled for today, but the main tasks are alternating hot compresses on the eye with cold pack on the hand, and listening to my audiobook. And I also get to look forward to watching the clouds in the rain come in. Not a bad day to look forward to, and certainly no reason for me to feel as grumpy as I do (smile.)
I just got back from that first walk, and it was quite lovely and refreshing, and it certainly lifted my spirits. As you can see from the photos ,while the sky is blue and it was quite sunny. The clouds are beginning to come in with showers supposedly starting around two. Here are some lovely spring blooms for your pleasure as well.

The lovely lavender blossoms look like the ones we have later in the spring and are called Naked Ladies!
I hope you start to feel better very soon! Nothing so annoying and exhausting as niggling little pains that just don't go away. I hope they don't keep you from sleeping!
