Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1240:
Yesterday I spent way too much time answering emails and texts about the rain the day before, but I do appreciate that as people read or heard about San Diego’s flooding they felt the need to reach out and make sure my husband and I were ok. And the photos of various parts of the city that were inundated were rather amazing. The nature of the rain itself wasn’t that extraordinary, though. For example I had no trouble driving in the middle of it because the windshield wipers took care of the downpour just fine—and I’ve lived in places where a hard rain means wipers can’t work fast enough. It was just the amount of rain in a short time in a place where neither drains or drivers are prepared for rain that isn’t just a light drizzle.
Because the rain was over by yesterday morning, with the sun coming in and out, I got in both walks. But I only had the time to edit the section I was working on in the novel before I got an unscheduled phone call, then the same thing happened after lunch, and then I had another scheduled phone call. All of which explains why, when people worry I might feel isolated because I am not going out to public places to have coffee with people, etc. I have to laugh. If I wasn’t so socially connected, I might get more writing done!
Today, the usual for Wednesday morning, yoga, clean, walk, although I’ve already had had one unscheduled phone call, I was able to take it while walking. I have another scheduled call before lunch, but otherwise a very normal day ahead of me.
In addition, I’m very happy with the number of you (65 so far) who have answered my poll questions, and you have another day to answer. Very useful information.
Tomorrow will be another very busy day, lab tests in morning (one that is fasting), regular exercise, regular noon zoom meeting, phone meeting after the meeting, and since it is my birthday, probably a few phone calls with people.
Here is a photo of the clouds last night as I took my last walk, and an odd lawn ornament.

The photo of the clouds is stunning. The calm after the storm. We have had freezing temperatures followed by storms. I know the feeling of being alone and getting on with things. Particularly when I am tired. I love your daily posts, thank you xxx
I was moved to wonder if you been flooded, but I figured you'd let everyone know.
