Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully. Occasionally, I will also publish some of my shorter fiction in this newsletter to read for free.
Daily Diary, Day 1687:
Yesterday, the sun only came in the late afternoon, so the morning walk was chilly enough for a jacket on top of my hoodie, but by the time I took my second walk it was in mid-sixties, with the first rays of sun.
I wrote some in the morning, but the phone call I had before lunch went much longer than planned. So, I had lunch almost an hour later than usual, so by the time I finished and got in an hour more of writing, it was time for that second walk. I have been a little short on sleep the past two nights, so I was pretty draggy by that second walk, so I just read in the short time left before dinner, but I did get over 700 words written, so sticking to getting at least 500 words a day.
After dinner we rewatched the thriller Michael Clayton, and really enjoyed. Interesting in that in this movie he is a lawyer (sort of a fixer) and we had recently watched Clooney play a lawyer in the comedy, Intolerable Differences. So impressed by his acting ability.
I had a good night’s sleep, yoga first thing in the morning, cleaned, and after this post, I will do my first walk (once again cloudy). A possible phone call scheduled today, but otherwise, I hope to get in more writing and recreational reading.
Thought I might show you some of the blossoms that aren’t roses. I was particularly intrigued by the poppies.

I also had a draggy day yesterday due to loss of sleep. It was hard to fight it, as I was trying to get all my "doings" done, but alas I could not finish it all. Today is not any better but hopefully I will finish things. Old age and pains keep getting in my way, as much as I don't want to admit it!
I have noticed lots of poppies this year. There are either more of them or they are standing out for some reason. Either way, I enjoy their POP of color!
