Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1281:
This is another good news and bad news report in terms of how yesterday went. First of all, the good news is that I was able to get some editing done in the morning and get slightly over 1000 words written in the afternoon through dictation.
However, suddenly, in the afternoon, the pain in my knuckle got really painful, but advil didn’t seem to help. As a result, I’ve gotten an emergency visit with a primary care Dr. to check on the knuckle this morning. I don’t want to wait the two weeks for my scheduled appointment.
I am now finishing this post having returned from the clinic. I had an 8:30 am appointment, was seen right on time, then sent down to x-ray, and within an hour the doctor had the results and I was on my way home. The good news is no fracture, just some evidence of calcification around old injuries and some soft tissue damage. The prescription is to continue to ice alternating with some heat and take ibuprofen, supplementing the oral with the cream when I can, because it’s easier on my stomach. The doctor also recommended that I order a finger splint for the index finger to help me keep from re-damaging it.
And then, of course the key is patience, since soft tissue damage can take a long time to heal and currently my body is clearly having two sources of inflammation to react to, referencing the stye. She recommended that by the end of the week or the beginning of next I should probably take another picture of the stye and send to my ophthalmologist because in her opinion, he's probably going to have to lance it to have it finally resolved. This confirms my opinion as well, so once again, I was glad to be seen today.
So, off to take some advil, then put hot compresses on my eye, and then ice my finger, and then decide what I can do with the rest of the day, which did not start out the way I had initially planned. I will definitely try and do my Pilates before lunch and take a walk this afternoon since I didn’t have one this morning, and I do have one phone call scheduled. Beyond that maybe I will just rest—a novel concept for me!
Here is a photo I took while waiting for my husband to pick me up at the clinic, and some more daffodils.

Love seeing the daffodils! We have about 4 more inches of snow! I have an appointment with a hand doctor April 1. Good luck with that sty!
Something you might look into for your arthritis pain - I am allergic to capsacian so my doctor recommended that I try Arnicare Cream. You can use it multiple times a day in addition to any oral pain meds. Homeopathic medicine that I use for my hands and knee pain. Over the counter med found at Walgreens.
