Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1288:
Another good night’s sleep, and I think a little improvement in both eye and hand this morning, so I think this means I may have turned a corner. This also means I need to be particularly vigilant so that I don’t become lax in both doing the hot compresses for my eye, and keeping the splint on my hand, because I feel like it would be very easy to undo the improvement, especially for my finger.
As I expected, I didn’t get a lot of writing time yesterday, but I did get a little over 200 words dictated. It’s already almost 10 this morning, and although I’ve been busy doing the basic dusting and sweeping, putting on a load of laundry, ordering groceries to be delivered tomorrow, and putting hot compresses on my eye, I haven’t walked yet, so I will be lucky to get to the writing before 11. In consequence, maybe an hour to work this morning and an hour or so this afternoon before a scheduled phone call. Not sure if I will try to edit a little or dictate a new section.
There was actually sun for a while yesterday, but it got cloudy and we had a little spot of rain in the night. And this morning it’s only in the mid-50s and quite cloudy, with it not supposed to get warmer than the mid-sixties. This seems to be the forecast for the next week or so. Really can’t complain, and the clouds are producing lovely sunsets.
And some of the plants in the neighborhood seem to be enjoying this weather. I particularly love the vibrant color of this particular bush.

So glad you are starting to feel better
Love those purple flowers. Glad you had a good night's sleep too. So did I, which was a surprise because I just had breast cancer surgery yesterday. Whoa. But all's good. I wrote about it on last Thursday's Substack post - JACKIE'S MUSINGS & MEANDERINGS. Keep exercising and writing!!
