Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1218:
Except for the fact that everyone I met on my morning walk yesterday wished me Happy New Year, the day was pretty much a usual Monday, including having the border collie Rio come to play. I did have a scheduled long phone call with an old friend in the morning, but otherwise, regular exercise, and a couple of hours writing in the afternoon. I got a total of 345 words and a little time working on updating my FB header and webpage to show the discounts I am doing on the audiobook editions of my Caelestis series on Chirp.
I also spent some time trying to figure out if there are some special posts that I can do this coming month as I work to get the draft of the novel done. I hope by February I will be starting to do the research for my next novel (and maybe a shorter work in the mystery series) so I suspect I will have all sorts of things like historical tidbits to start posting. But I am trying very hard to stay away from starting that research until I can finish the novel I am working on.
One thing I am going to try to do is do a little polling of you all to get a better feel for the audience for both my series, so look for the first of those polls in tomorrow’s post.
Meanwhile, today, I after another good night’s sleep, I got going faster by taking a shorter walk (20 minute since I’ve started walking 40 minutes before dinner) earlier, after cleaning and paying some bills. I’ve now showered, started laundry, washed dishes, and after posting this, will be ready to start to write. I do have a late afternoon phone call scheduled, but that’s all.
Here is the very last rose I found on my walk this weekend, all the rest of the bushes look blasted by the cold (is getting down to 40s at night). I am definitely going to have to start focusing on succulents for awhile
