Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1330:
Sunday night a thick fog started to roll in from the west leaving everything wet in the morning. See the photo my husband took before we went to bed. As a result, all day yesterday was quite cloudy and chill, never getting above 61 degrees. We even turned on the furnace, which had been off for most of last week. Today is supposed to be more of the same, which is sort of a shame because a former work colleague and friend is coming over for a visit this afternoon, and I was hoping for warmer weather since we will be sitting outside. Oh, well, in some ways better than if it was blazing hot.
Because of my left knee still hurting from whatever I did to it (sitting cross-legged too long on hard floor of attic?), yesterday, I didn’t walk but did pilates 3 times. Goal today is once again substitute pilates for walking, and last night I switched to putting on Voltaren on the knee instead of taking advil. Knee still aches, but I had a good night’s sleep, and it is tolerable.
Yesterday I did get to spend most of the day editing, and got through chapter 6 and part of the way through chapter 7. Altogether, I cut 794 words! This morning I have been drafting one of my monthly newsletters to send out tomorrow morning, just finished my first 20 minutes of pilates, and I am icing my knee as I write this post. Next is a couple more marketing related tasks, and after lunch is my friends visit, followed immediately by a scheduled phone call, so I probably won’t get any editing work done. But the rest of the week I should be able to carve out time every day. I was especially pleased that yesterday the editing didn’t kick up the pain in my right index finger, even though I didn’t use the splint to remind me not to use that finger when typing. Keeping my metaphorical fingers crossed this wasn’t just because I was on advil!
Tomorrow I am putting up the last scene of the short story, so the whole thing will be there for those of you who have been waiting to read it all at once.
