Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1548:
Hope all of you in the states are enjoying the holiday in whatever fashion makes you happy. Most of our adult life my husband and I have lived in the southwest, while our primary extended family lived on the east coast, and most of the time our visits were during the summer when I had time off from my academic and teaching career. That means that most Thanksgivings were quiet affairs. Occasionally, we would spend the day with friends, but as vegetarians, we often found this awkward, because our hosts seemed to feel the need to cook something special or apologize for the fact that their stuffing had come from inside the bird. So, while our daughter was growing up, our ritual was a walk on the beach, then watching a movie on TV while we all worked to make the fruitcake that was the main present we sent to those eastern relatives for Christmas. Dinner was usually traditional--without the bird, and unadulterated stuffing--including homemade pumpkin pie. And we promised our daughter we wouldn’t work (smile.)
Now that our daughter and grandsons live up in Washington state, and my dietary restrictions preclude the carbs in a traditional dinner, the main way I will celebrate the holiday is to not work. Consequently, I wrote most of this post yesterday, and after I post it, I will go back to reading my mystery for the day, and maybe watch a romcom while my husband is having his nap and third second walk.
Sounds delightful, doesn’t it? Definitely a day to count my blessings. I would love to hear how you all are spending the day.
Here is a link to a lovely post that definitely is in the spirit of the holiday.

We are celebrating with my son and his sweetheart as well as my sister-in-law in Pasadena. Tomorrow we will go to Palm Springs where my daughter's family spends a week with friends. All but one of the grands will be there except one who is on exchange work trip in a small village in South Africa building above ground vegetable gardens. Have a wonderful relaxing day!
I so enjoyed reading about the history of your family Thanksgivings. I am most grateful that I had many happy times with lots of family enjoying a big dinner. I am happy this season of life having much quieter days. There is joy in both. Today I decided to not make a move trip to my new place but rest. Tomorrow I will move the rest out!
