Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1402:
I am afraid my mood today, which is supposed to be a day to celebrate of the founding of the United States, is very somber, because I am finding it difficult to avoid letting my concerns about the future of both my country and the world dominate my thoughts. But pessimism has never been my go-to emotion, and these posts have never been about imposing my particular social, economic, or political views on anyone, so I will instead mention a few reasons I do have to celebrate today.
First, I want to celebrate my good fortune in still having the mental ability to practice my second career as an independent author, where I have been able to write stories about the past and the near future that do let me consider some of my concerns in a way that is both informative and entertaining.
Second, I wish to celebrate all those of you have supported me in this endeavor. Your kind words and willingness to buy, read, and post reviews have been enormously important to me over the past fourteen years.
Finally, I would like to celebrate the fact that I live in a friendly, diverse neighborhood, where neighbors brighten my day with their kind waves and smiles and where so many have taken to time to plant the beautiful flowers that I have been then able share with you all.
Here are some of my favorites from the past week, and I sincerely hope that today you will all find your own reasons to celebrate.

Indeed! I,too, celebrate your appreciation for what we have, and live in despair for what the future may hold for us.
Happy Fourth nonetheless! It is scary, but I am going to visit my 93 year mother wearing red white & blue because she will like it very much.
