Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Thursday, February 29, 2024 Day 1276.
Yesterday wasn’t quite as productive in terms of writing. In fact, it was one of those days that, after editing, I actually had -100 words written. But today I’m hoping to start making some progress again. I did get all my exercise in and once again, the day alternated between clouds and sun.
One of the reasons why I didn’t get as much written is that not only did I have a scheduled phone call that got delayed until after lunch. but just as I got ready to write, I got a phone call from a young relative. He works in New York City and often will call me when he is walking. I haven’t heard from him for at least a month so of course I took the call. It was great to hear from him and catch up on his life and that of his mother who is one of my close cousins. However, by the time the call was over it was time for my afternoon walk, and then dinner.
Much to our delight, the next season of Vera started last evening and we watched it. There are only three episodes this season, but it was particularly fun because Joe (Ashford?) who was her first sergeant, has returned for the season.
This morning I’ve done my cleaning, and I canceled a dentist appointment for next week because with a stye I don’t want people poking around in my mouth. After I do this post, I will take my morning walk. Then I should have at least an hour to start writing. This is my usual Thursday noon zoom meeting but I don’t have any other phone meetings schedule afterwards so once again, I’m hoping I will have at some time to write in the afternoon.
I decided to include some Bird of Paradise photos today. These were some of the first exotic (to my midwestern eye) plants I noticed when we moved west. I always feel as if I am actually seeing a gaggle of birds hiding in a bush. Makes me smile.

I love those flowers, too! Hope the stye heals quickly. So painful.
Birds of Paradise hold a special place in my heart. My husband created an almost two week long series of clues and solutions, my very own mystery, that began with sending me these flowers and ended with a proposal. Thank you for sharing.
