Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1213:
Sometimes as I write these posts, I worry about boring you all with how routine some of my days are. I can only assume that some of you find that routine reassuring, while others can simply delete and open the posts that are specific to topics, like my recommendations, or historical tidbits.
However, from my perspective yesterday was a great day, despite its routine. I got in my exercise, got over 900 words written, and had a delightful phone conversation with a friend that included lots of laughter.
The writing did do one of its expanding tricks. My outline said that this section would have two chapters, one or two scenes each, but today while I was showering it occurred to me that a chapter in between those two chapters would be useful in terms of not bogging down the second planned chapter. So, that is what I worked on yesterday. But what I thought was going to be a short paragraph introducing this new chapter grew, and is now a complete scene, so I will still need to do a scene before I get into that planned chapter.
I rather expected that might happen. And since this is my usual Thursday, with noon zoom meeting (and preparation for that meeting) and a phone meeting afterwards, I don’t expect to get very far along. Which is also part of my routine.
We have been having fog roll in every night during the night (I get up multiple times a night and pass a window, so I get to monitor this-even taking the time to put on my glasses those nights when the moon is fool). What is fascinating is to see thick fog, then 2 hours later its gone. Most mornings it has disappeared before we get up, but this morning it still lay in the canyon we can see out our back. The first photo is from when I got up (see moon still in sky) and the second was an hour later. I am about to walk, and the sun is definitely out, but there is still fog in the canyons.

Beautiful photo's as usual. Just want to mention that having a routine is good, not boring. Most (like myself) people thrive with structured lives. Do whatever you feel suits you best!
