Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1300:
Celebrations:
Bookbub Promotion: While this promotion hasn’t done as well as I’d hoped, it certainly has brought in more readers and this means, overtime, more sales than I have been having. In the week before the promotion itself, there were less than 100 copies of Maids of Misfortune downloaded, and my total sales of books in the series was less than $200. In contrast, in just the last four days there have been just under 9000 downloads of the book and I’ve made $100 more in the series, all of this increase coming from Uneasy Spirits, the second book in the series.
Weather:
Oh, my goodness, the past four days have just been delightful. First, Wednesday through Friday we had a lovely sunny days. This was perfect timing. I had just decided to spend time reading through the first four books in the Caelestis series to get ready for when my injury to my hand was healed and I could start the process of the first major edit of the book. I can’t work outside on my computer because of the glare, but I can read on my Kindle. This meant that rather than be tempted to work on the computer over these three days, I gladly sat out in the sun for a bout an hour in the morning and about two hours in the afternoons. It is still chilly enough so that I didn’t get too hot, even when sitting directly in the sun.
The following pictures are first from Friday morning with the blue sky above me and the cute very tiny lizard that decided I was not all that scary. The third photo is a selfie t oshow you that the clouds were beginning to come in as they often do from the west, but that it was still sunny enough for me to have to wear my sun hat.
However, in case I was going to get bored with day-after-day of sun, the next day, yesterday, the weather changed dramatically. The first photo is of the dramatic clouds rolling in, the second is from after lunch, when it started to pour. Then, surprise, surprise, four hours later, by dinner time, all the clouds are gone, except for a tiny hazy bit over the ocean.
Yet, less than 30 later, more clouds began to roll in as you can see from this photo, and there was a brief bit of rain around the time we went to bed.
Overnight it began to be extremely windy, but no more rain. The next photo is from a little before six this morning, with a nearly full moon slipping behind clouds. No rain was forecast until later this afternoon however, it decided to drizzle just as my husband took Leeza out for her first walk. That was less than two hours ago, and now we have sun, which Lisa is enjoying sitting by sitting on the couch by the front window.
So, ta da! these are my celebrations for this week, what are yours?

I really enjoy your pictures and your articles. I wish I could be as organized as you are! I don’t think I could get up at 5:30 a.m. unless it was a life-threatening reason :-)
