Sunday, March 16, 2024: Ta da! List
Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1293:
Celebrations:
General Improvement in health:
While I am still dealing with some arthritis pain beyond the injured knuckle, it is not nearly as bad as it was several days ago. I even spent some time out of the splint yesterday, and this morning, after my downstairs cleaning (with splint on), the hand is only a little achy. Overall, I see a definite improvement in the knuckle, and I am feeling much more optimistic that a couple more weeks of healing should get me back to normal.
While the eye hasn’t shown discernable improvement the past few days, (still slightly swollen), if I compared my statis to last week, the eyelid is much better, and I think that’s the comparison I need to make rather than spending too much time trying to figure out if all the infection is gone. It will either slowly get better or it will get worse. If the latter happens, I know that getting it drained again is probably the best solution.
Watched and enjoyed the movie Barbie:
I have hesitated watching this movie for a couple of reasons. I have never been a fan of the doll, I didn’t have one growing up, although several of my friends did, but I found her shape ridiculous—seeds of a budding feminist. As a parent I did not get my daughter a Barbie. This means I didn’t have the fond memories that many people seem to have of all of the various kinds of Barbies. In addition, I assumed my husband didn’t have any particular desire to see the movie, although we both have enjoyed movies by Greta Gerwig in the past.
However, in our last conversation with my daughter, she said that she had liked the movie, and that her boyfriend and sons did as well, so my husband and I decided to give it a try. While neither one of us were quite as enthusiastic as many people were about seeing it, we did enjoy, and it certainly made us laugh.
Such beautiful spring weather:
While I did appreciate the rain we had a couple of weeks ago, I’ve got to say this past week of sun and clouds and gorgeous sunsets has been particularly delightful. We have been having a warming trend and mild Santa Ana, which means that the winds come from the desert rather than from the ocean. This gives us clear and cold nights instead of the usual mist and fog. The result of this pattern is that even with the bright sunshine, like what we’re having this morning, it’s still cool enough to make walking pleasant. This pattern is supposed to continue for all of next week with the temperatures actually getting up to near 70. However, there is a forecast for a drop in the daytime temperature and the possibility of rain by next Saturday. But you know me, I’m going to enjoy the change and embrace the rain if it actually comes. The rose bushes have been celebrating the bit of sun and warm temperatures as well.
So, ta da! these are my celebrations this week, what are yours?
