Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1223:
Another week gone, another couple of reasons to celebrate.
The results from Wednesday’s poll:
First of all, I would like to celebrate the fact that 75 of you responded to the poll I did on Wednesday. I really didn’t expect that much feedback. Here is a link to that post in case you want to check the context for taking that poll.
On one hand, there weren’t a lot of surprises in the data. As expected, based on my facebook data and my general impressions from emails and comments over the years, the majority of those of you who responded (84%) were female and 84 % were 55 and over. There was a difference between the males and females in terms of age. 73% of the males and 86% of the females who responded were over 55.
While these percentages don’t necessarily reflect the demographic breakdown for all of the people who are fans of my books, or even all of the people who subscribe to this newsletter, the did rather conform to my expectations.
However, I would love to hear in comments if you are one of those subscribers who are under 55 (especially under 35!) with some idea if you have read my books, or why you have particularly decided to become a subscriber.
Because I am so pleased with the level of feedback, in Tuesday’s newsletter I will have some other polls to try to figure out more precisely why you all have subscribed to this newsletter, and if you are someone who are fans of my books, if you have a preference between my mysteries or my science fiction.
The weather:
A second reason for celebration for me is the weather we have been having lately. First of all, I enjoyed the fact that it increasingly does feel like winter, with cold nights (one night got to 30s) and there has been rain, sun, and today gale force winds! In addition, the clouds have been suburb, and here are a few examples.
Progress on the novel and exercise:
Finally, I would like to celebrate that I got some writing done every day (averaging 411 words, and making progress on the plot) and my exercise routine is continuing to work and be sustainable. I am particularly happy to celebrate that this routine has meant my blood sugar is under control, and I lost enough weight to be able to shift to more of a maintenance diet, which means I have been able to add the 2 crackers at dinner that I jettisoned AND have almond butter on them. This may not seem like a big thing, but with the strict, limited diet I have, little indulgences like this are really a reason to celebrate!
As usual, I would love to hear what you have to celebrate!

The cloud pictures are beautiful!
Celebrate the fact that I seem (operative word=seem) to be over the stomach flu I had on Christmas day and again two nights later. Celebrate I got my fists on the new Mercedes Lackey Valdemar book and read it in 2.5 days. Otherwise, moderately healthy and well loved by 12 cats, especially the 6 kittens. I wish I could walk like you do, but my knees scream if I try and the neighborhood is not very safe to walk in.
