Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully. Occasionally, I will also publish some of my shorter fiction in this newsletter to read for free.
Daily Diary, Day 1635: A Small Moment of Delight
I did think I might do a TaDa! post today to celebrate the end of the week and a half my husband and I spent with all the rigmarole that went into replacing our queen-sized bed with a king. But, while as I have shared, I have slept well on the new bed, I thought I would like to wait to celebrate until I was sure that this wasn’t just a fluke! Could be I was simply conking out each night from the exhaustion of doing all the running up and down the stairs and even minor physical activity of helping brace or hold pieces of furniture up as my husband screwed things together.
But the main reason I decided to once again do a small moment of delight post today is how excited I felt yesterday when I finally went for a walk and discovered the first daffodil of spring.
First of all, it was so lovely to get outside. I had spent all day yesterday working hard on taxes. But right before dinner, I was at a good stopping place and decided to take advantage of the fact that with the lengthening of the days, the sun was up in the sky enough that I wouldn’t need a jacket. I’ve only walked twice in the past month, each time causing my feet to complain, so I was very careful about not going far or for longer than 10 minutes. My reward was that, just as I was coming back down the street, I was absolutely delighted to see this lone daffodil in a neighbor’s yard.
I know that those of you in the east coast have had a bad cold spell, but have any of you seen some harbingers of spring that bring you delights. And, for those of you in the southern hemisphere, what do you see as a harbinger of fall or winter?

The first bloom of my apple blossom camellia burst open a couple of days ago.
My Mom was craving daffodils and considered negotiating with her church's landscaper to dig some up from there. I took her to Trader Joes and sure enough they had exactly what she was looking for. It came in a pot of soil and the buds are in full bloom!
