Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, , Day 1376:
Today started as normal with me, intermixing cleaning, laundry and taking my first walk. I also consulted with my husband and we chose colors for new towels for the remodeled bathrooms. He chose a dark blue for the hall bathroom, which is the bathroom he normally uses. He asked if I was OK keeping this arrangement since we are replacing the exiting tub with a walk in, that has a pull-down seat and one of those showers that you can use when you’re sitting. He’s always used that particular hall bathroom, although we had to laugh because neither of us was quite sure why we made that decision 30 years ago. We think it’s because it was it’s bigger and he also likes the fact that after the shower he can go into the master bathroom to shave and not be worried about the mirror being all fogged up.
I told him that I would continue to prefer the master bathroom, even if the shower stall was small, and from my perspective, the seat and the showerhead in the hall bathroom was only a contingency in case either one of us, at some point, found standing in the shower difficult, and I hoped that neither one of us would ever need this any time soon. For the master bath I chose a steel gray for the towels, which in my mind, goes better with the tile and counter top.
In general, I now tend to wear navy and gray, and most of the house—couch covers, etc—are navy colors, (although I did favor maroons and forest greens for clothing during my years as a professor). However, I have never been one to wear pink. But as I looked at the gray towels in the catalog on line, I remembered that at some point in my childhood, I decorated my room with a combination of pink and gray. So, I think I may try to figure out how to do some pops of pink in the master bath bathroom to relieve the gray. A second childhood??? Who knows. But I am now on the hunt for bathroom accessories, like toothbrush holders, that are pink—or at least a dusky rose (smile.)
I had another good night, although my back hurt a lot when I first got up, but a brief time with a heating pad seemed to take care of that. And, now that I’ve been off the oral Advil for six days, I am experimenting with just putting the voltaren gel on my hands to see whether or not that improves things or not.
I’ve had one scheduled phone call this morning. Nothing else scheduled, but there are a few people on my life who are confronting various personal crises right now, so I would not be surprised if I have a few more unscheduled calls. Meanwhile, I am almost done with book 4 in my series, and I am enjoying myself so much I had trouble tearing myself away to do this post! I had forgotten how much pleasure I get binge rereading a series that I love. I am having so much fun!
I love hearing from you all, so it will tickle me if you share what colors for your bathrooms you have favored, and if you have noticed your color preferences changing over time. (How many of you remember when having your “colors” done was the thing!)
Speaking of pink, here’s a rose from the yard across the street from us.

Maybe an arrangement of lovely roses? Your photos are amazing . . . Maybe frame one?
