Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1236:
Last couple of days I’ve been working to outline the next section of my work in progress, including taking some notes about things I would like to add in when I start the full edit. I also started on a chapter that really gets into details about the whole Paradisi Chronicles timeline and narrative that came out in storis by other authors who had written work within the Paradisi Chronicles universe. (Just a reminder that the Paradisi Chronicles was an experiment to bring multiple authors together to create and write in a shared universe.) I confess, for right now I am the only one still actively writing in this universe, although there are a few who have continuing their stories on their long to-do lists. But I do like weaving plot elements from other stories into my own narrative. In addition, there are aspects of the whole narrative we created at the beginning as a group that I have been waiting to expand on in my own series, for example the actual truth about the origins of the Native Ddaerans. Anyway, I am finally getting to do this in the chapter I am writing, so I am trying hard not to dump too much information.
This week I’ve also been more careful about not over-doing the exercise because I was finding some aches and pains after a couple of days with well over 2 hours of exercise. So, yesterday after doing yoga, and my usual longer time on my feet doing Friday cleaning, I skipped the morning walk. Even so, with 30 minutes of Pilates and afternoon walk I still had a total of slightly over 2 hours of mild exercise yesterday.
Today I’ve done a slightly longer cleaning (an hour) and as soon as I finish this post, I am going to go for a walk, which might be the last rain-free walk for several days. So far the forecast of rain is holding steady, with showers starting around noon today, then turning to rain this afternoon and evening, and showers most of Sunday, and then again 95% chance of rain on Monday, tapering off to showers Tuesday morning. That’s a lot of rain if it actually happens. I have a phone call scheduled this afternoon, but I should be able to get in a good couple of hours writing after my walk.
Here are some photographs from my walk last evening, with a rather eerie evening light from the bank of clouds that were coming in from over the ocean, and a single pale pink rosebud.
