Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1215:
As I write this, we are actually having rain this morning, rain you can actually see, not a drizzling mist. Now, it was supposed to start last night and go all day, but it has started at 8 am and isn’t supposed to continue for more than two hours, but hey, Rain!
My husband snuck in a short walk with the dog this morning, but I missed my chance for a morning walk. However, I did get in my cleaning and ordered groceries. Yesterday I did get in slightly over 300 words written, which was actually more than I expected, and after I post this I have a day with no phone calls and lots of time to write, both on the novel and on my Ta Da! List for the Year 2023 post tomorrow.
Yesterday evening, we tried to watch a recent Pierce Brosnan action movie (tired trope of aging assassin on the run). I generally enjoy Brosnan’s sly humor, and the movie (Fast Charlie) was recommended by NYTimes in one of their best of lists, but we couldn’t tolerate more than 15 minutes, despite having actually rented it.
So, we cleansed our palate by rewatching a charming movie called Columbus. One of those movies where on the surface not a lot happens, except for long conversations—in this case—about Columbus architecture, but the result is a lovely character study of the two main protagonists. Very satisfying way to spend the evening.
There are still a lot of xmas decorations up, I bet people wished they’d taken them down before the rain! However, yesterday evening I took these photos of fallen leaves, to go along with the photo of the full tree they came from that I took last week. Much more apropos for the day today.

As we drove through the rain yesterday, and passed under a tree whose leaves had turned a brilliant yellow and laid a carpet on the street, I commented to my daughter on how we were experiencing both fall and winter at the same time. Gotta love California!
We were on our way back from the zoo, where I learned that my godson loves birds. I shared tales of your bird feeder and now feel inspired to look into something similar for him . . .
