Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1334:
Back to dictation again because yesterday, doing something very simple, tugging at something to pull it straight, there was a sudden sharp pain in my middle finger in my right hand. Felt like a tendon popped. Sigh. At least I already had a splint that I could put on because the splint I had for my index finger can be used for any finger and I stopped using it for the index finger a week ago.
So yesterday I iced and have been wearing the splint and that has generally kept it from being too painful. It hasn’t gotten swollen and I can move the finger although it is stiff and sort of stutters like the tendon is having trouble doing its job, and is painful if I actually try to do anything with it. I have an appointment with my primary care physician first thing Monday morning, although I suspect it will just be a sprained tendon and not much can be done except not use it, keep it in splint.
I am trying very hard not to be too discouraged, since it took almost full two months for the index finger to calm down. And, of course, what I had been doing was using that middle finger instead of the index finger, as much as I could, which might have something to do with why the in the middle finger tendon popped. I certainly shouldn’t go back to using the index finger instead of a middle finger because it’s clearly not completely healed. Well darn it.
Today is the day we started moving from master bedroom to the front room (there are two small rooms at the front of the house, one a guest bedroom, another which we called the boys room because that’s where we put down futons for our two grandsons when they visited. That is the room we clean out (putting children’s books etc in attic. We are using the guest room as sort of our walk-in closet (using the dresser and closet in there for clothes we use all the time.
We tried we tried desperately to figure out how to move the bedframe into what will be our bedroom for the next 6 weeks, but after about an hour of trying it this way and that way and flipping it and trying angle it from the room across the hall, nothing worked.
So just going with the mattresses on the floor. It’s a very deep mattress, so I don’t think I’ll have too much trouble getting up out of bed and there’s also a chair that I put in there to help me get up if I feel like I need some extra help.
However, everything is moved out of the master bathroom and bedroom, and I’ve done a basic dust and sweep of the master bedroom (oh the dust behind the night stands!!!) although I need to do a much more thorough clean once they’re done with this first project, before we move everything back in. I also took my first shower in the hall bathroom, being very careful because it is a tub, with not good place to hang on. That will change when they redo this hall bath.
Needless to say, given that I’ve been on my feet going back-and-forth, back-and-forth, to move things, for at least three hours this morning, the left knee is doing pretty well, but I certainly don’t feel the need to walk today.
As far as what all this means for my writing, I’m simply not going to think about it until I’ve rested and seen the doctor on Monday.
Meanwhile, it’s gotten sunny and warm, and so after lunch I am going to go outside and read, having definitely put in a good day’s work already!!

Sorry for your painful experience. At this point we are victims of arthritis and age! Thanks for sharing the beautiful blossoms.
Sorry to hear about your finger, but happy to hear that you have a plan and are moving forward with dictation. Congrats on getting your room moved and ready for construction. Can't wait to celebrate with you when it's all done!
