Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1320:
Finally, I finished the chapter I was working on, and actually cut 108 words yesterday. I also did yoga, cleaning, 2 walks, had one scheduled phone call, and one unscheduled call, so a full day. Today, no scheduled phone calls, and I have finished main cleaning upstairs, and had my first walk. So now time to see if I can get going a bit faster with the editing, without getting stuck rewriting that first chapter.
One of the interesting things I noted during my morning walk yesterday was how many gardeners were working in the neighborhood. I mean a really unusual number, and I speculated that was because of the recent rainfall, which has caused everything, including grass and weeds, to grow faster than usual for San Diego. The result, I suspect, was that people who didn’t normally pay to get yard work done, couldn’t stand it any longer, or perhaps asked their regular gardeners to come off schedule to deal with the mess. Maybe it was the fact that rain was predicted for today, so the gardeners themselves were trying to get in their work a day early.
All of the above might be true and caused the increase, and in the afternoon I did notice that two yards I had noticed because they hadn’t had any work done on them for months and months, so truly impressive crop of weeds were growing, had suddenly been trimmed.
No judgement on my part because last year, we were in that position, but I am pleased that the landscaping we had done (weed barriers and rocks) last summer has meant our front yard has weathered the rainy weather quite well this year.
It is still predicted to have “showers” starting around six today, so I will definitely plan on getting my second walk in before dinner. And the clouds rolled in yesterday evening (see first photo), and the second is from this morning, framing the rose I found shining with that particular vibrancy that happens on a gray day.
