Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1545:
This morning, I had to cancel the usual doggie play date because I had called and gotten an early appointment with my primary care Dr. She had told me the last time I came in that if I didn’t want to wait (or go to urgent care) she usually had a few “safety” slots for last minute appointments. So, even though I had a scheduled appointment with her to talk about my foot for Friday, after this weekend I decided I shouldn’t wait and called at 7 and got an appointment before 9. As I described to her how this last bout of plantar fasciitis seemed to differ from previous ones, she agreed that something else seemed to be going on, so she sent me down to get an x-ray. The possibilities could include, if no fractures--bone spurs, and general arthritis, which x-rays might show, but if soft tissue problems, harder to diagnose.
This may take a week or more to get results and her advice was not to do anything that seems to make foot hurt more for now. Including the stretches. The reason I had decided to speed up being seen was I noticed this weekend that the stretches, which usually ease plantar fascia pain, were actually making foot hurt worse.
So for now, no walking, limited use of stairs, no stretches, but I will continue doing yoga (had my breathing yoga this morning), chair pilates, and enjoying reading (and boring you with my medical saga.) I must say, after years of only going to doctor for annual check-ups, I feel like I’m in there every couple of months. I suspect this is the new normal.
However, I may have to start being more innovative about photos (expect lots more dog pictures), since walking may not be in my immediate future.

Dog pictures are always welcome!
I, too, find that I have seen more doctors in the last two months than I have in the last 10 years. (I'm turning 82 in January. I hope this is not the new normal!!)
You are the only person who can accurately describe what and where the pain is! As we age we become more aware of the idiosyncratic state of our bodies! Be specific with your doctors! You are a very good patient!
