Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1280:
I thought I’d start today’s post with what I saw first thing this morning when I got up, which was a rainbow. I figured this was a good omen for the week. The stye is definitely improving in that it’s not nearly as sore. It’s moved into the itchy stage, but rather in musingly as it deflates it slumping down over the eye so that I see this little crescent as I look ahead. I trust that this will resolve itself soon!
On the other hand, the knuckle is pretty sore this morning, maybe even a little swollen, and so I did take some Advil, and I may experiment later in the day with putting on Voltaren, which is a kind of Advil cream, on the knuckle directly rather than taking advil orally. I am also going to try to avoid typing as much as possible.
I’m also going to ice it more often during the day—so a day of hot compresses on the eye, cold ice pack on the hand!
As for yesterday, I didn’t even try and write, instead I let the knuckle rest and caught up on most of the newsletter reading and emails that have been building up. I also spent much of the middle of the day watching the house across the street as it had its first open house. (the family sellimg asked me to text them how it was going.) The family moved in just about a year after we did, which means we have known them for 30 years and so the fact that they are selling is bitter sweet. On the other hand, the house has been launching the family slowly bit by bit over the years, so that the only person who is currently still living there is the husband, who will move up north to join the youngest son as soon as the house sells. To that extent, we’ve already adjusted to the emotional loss, which has made it easier to look forward to getting to know the next occupants. I know the family are hoping very much to sell to a young family who can enjoy the house and the neighborhood as much as they did.
Our neighborhood is very much a family neighborhood, and it’s centrally located in easy distance of most of the major freeways, both east and west and north and south. This means that it makes it a very good commuting neighborhood as well. But the effect of this is that the prices have become completely outrageous. There’s also very little inventory left because pretty much anybody who was thinking about downsizing or making money from the area sold in the last major rush of high prices. The effect of this is that, yesterday, during the first open house, there were over 30 groups who came to see it within just two hours. I will not be surprised if the house sells within the next 24 to 48 hours.
Meanwhile, I’ve already done my cleaning, had my first walk, and chatted while Rio, the border collie came over to play. Except for my regular Pilates, one scheduled phone call in the late afternoon, and then late afternoon walk, I hope that I will be able to make some progress on the novel. In short, I’m looking forward to a very good day.
The photos below are some that I took of flowers during yesterday’s walk that showed the droplets of rain on them. This mornings it is sunny, but lots of clouds moving throug, so I think the next couple days are going to be very much like the last couple, although there’s been no precipitation forecast until Wednesday, I won’t be surprised if we get a shower or two before then.
Hope y’all had a great weekend.

hope you feel better soon. Thank you for the pictures. They brightened my day.
I always see a rainbow as a good omen, too. I emphasize with you on the knuckle, as I have the same problem and it’s interfering with playing the piano!
