Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully. Occasionally, I will also publish some of my shorter fiction in this newsletter to read for free.
Daily Diary, Day 1762:
Edgar’s friends: Miss Teeny still hanging in there! But I really am worried about her. So tiny, and hasn’t moved. Almost tempted to put the duster up there to see if this prompts her to move a little.
In the wild-life category, old chubby baby finch is still hanging out, getting chubbier and chubbier. But I’ve noticed some of the other finches hassling him, although he still sticks his ground more than most of the birds do.
I was also pleased to see a black-eyed junco showing up at the feeder. They are often in the back yard, but seldom at the feeder. Made me wonder if this isn’t a youngster as well.

And this morning when I walked, there were five crows hanging out about 5 doors down from the neighbor’s house who is feuding with them. Again, while I did see some crows other blocks during my walk, they were all clearly scavenging – since they had objects in their mouths. And they would be gone when I came back that way. But not the crows near the neighbor’s house, they were just hanging around, waiting to go yell at him if he came out of the house. Again there this morning.

I followed the usual routine this weekend, extra cleaning, some writing, phone calls, walking, and on my walks taking photos. I was thinking about doing a small moment of delight post yesterday, instead of the Tada! post I did, featuring yellow blossoms (last week it was all about purple. But there were just too many. So today, and perhaps for most of the week I will feature a couple yellow blooms on each post. So Enjoy!

Birds. I have several bird baths that attract white wing doves, in spite of the neighbor's cats preferring my shady porch during this heat. I put out treats for those cats since the stay there all day. Kibbles are left behind after they wander off. In wanders a single dove to quickly devour them and I think it is the same brave one!
I got back from running an errand this afternoon and Big Boss Crow was standing on the neighbor's planter. I spoke to him and he is STILL not impressed with me. Flew up to the roof and gave me the eye till I left.
