Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Monday, February 19, 2024, Day 1266:
By the end of yesterday, I had made some good progress on getting everything together for taxes, but not nearly done. In addition to working on the taxes, I did 5 loads of laundry, cleaned the bathrooms and kitchen counters, ordered and put away groceries, and I also got in one walk and one scheduled phone call. Needless-to-say, by dinner time I was really tired. Didn’t help that I had lost some sleep Saturday night, because I found myself going over tax stuff!
I do hope that today, I’ll finish. I still have all the receipts to get together and add up that are connected to business expenses, (cover design, edition costs, advertising costs, software, subscriptions, etc), but I’ve already finished medical expenses this morning, finishing does seem doable.
Meanwhile, the weather.com keeps saying there is a flood watch from Monday evening to Wednesday morning, but only 69% chance of rain on Tuesday, all the rest of the time just occasional showers, which we’ve already had this morning (sun is trying to come out, and the drizzle held off for Rio and Leeza’s doggie play date).
The clouds yesterday afternoon were a whole different brand of clouds than today. I always feel these look sort of like cobblestones across the sky.

Mackerel sky!
I like seeing them as cobblestones better!
