Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1259:
Brrr… cold this morning. It went down to 36 degrees last night, and the heat pump has been pumping away since 5:30 and hasn’t gotten the downstairs up past 65 degrees yet (we are happiest at 67.) Yesterday was another sunny one, high of 65, so very pleasant, and while not supposed to get quite as warm today, it is to remain sunny. However, starting tomorrow, clouds are coming back (we shall see what kinds) but no rain forecast until next Saturday.
I did get in a late afternoon walk yesterday, and I did achieve 840 words, and today I’ve done my yoga, cleaning, had my walk, and Rio the border collie has come to play. I will post this and get back to writing. No scheduled phone calls today!
When I got back from the walk yesterday afternoon, my husband asked if everyone was inside watching the super bowl, and I realized that I had only seen one person who was walking her dog, and very few cars. So, I guess everyone was. The game had just ended as we started to get ready for bed, so I did see that it had been exciting, with a big finish that would make the Swifties happy. I figure if so many people were going to watch, nice that it was not a lop-sided bore.
Since there were no clouds to look at in my afternoon walk yesterday, I decided to search for small blooms that were in surprising places (bushes that had been trimmed, but one bit had missed being cut so there was only one blossom, or when a plant somehow hides itself in another, and blooms.) Hope you enjoy!

We had lots of excitement up here near Oakland after the Super Bowl. Lots of fireworks going off, even though we lost. Go figure. I guess they had them, so why not? My son is an Oakland police officer and got shot at for the first time. But, thankful it wasn't as bad as when the Raiders last lost a big game here. Oakland was trashed, garbage cans through windows and all that fun stuff. Ironically, hubby's family lives in Kansas, so at least they were happy with the outcome!
