Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1336:
Some unexpected phone calls yesterday meant that I didn’t get to working on the post I wanted to do that will provide some background on my prequel short story, Madame Sybil’s First Client. So today this will be a regular post, and then I will try to get the Sybil post written for tomorrow. Hopefully, that will let me send it out tomorrow so that I can start with the first scene of the short story on Wednesday as intended
After morning yoga, I had an early appointment with my primary care physician this morning, and the conclusion is what I expected, which is that the new injury to the finger is a sprained tendon. It is already feeling better with icing and making sure I am wearing the splint when I’m doing anything active. I didn’t even need to wear the splint while sleeping.
So, besides a regular diabetes test (which I passed, meaning I still have feeling in my toes) my left knee was the focus of the rest of the visit. Her assessment was simply that my knees are arthritic and that all the work I have been doing these past two weeks to get ready for the remodel made the left knee, in particular, very unhappy. Her advice was to put voltaren on four times a day until the pain is resolved. Bit best of all that I shouldn’t stop walking daily, just break the walks up into very short intervals as frequently as possible until I can work out to my regular schedule.
I was extremely pleased to hear that even if it hurt it was OK to continue to walk since that is so crucial to the rest of my health and well-being. My fear was that I was going to have to wear some sort of brace and stop walking. Pain, as long as I am not hurting myself, I can handle.
As for the writing, I’ll take it slowly since the finger does seem to be healing quickly, but the other finger took a good two months to completely healed so I don’t want to push it and set myself back.
I must say that this last round of minor of injuries have certainly made me feel my age.
After getting back from doctor’s visit, I cleaned, and have been working on doing laundry. Interestingly, going up and down the stairs steps doesn’t seem to hurt. After publishing this, I will get started on the Madam Sibyl post. I also have a late afternoon phone call scheduled, and depending upon how I feel—and how hot it has gotten—I may take a short walk after dinner.
I thought I would leave you with a before and after photo. The first is the small front room after pretty much everything had been taken out of it, much of it going into the attic. The second is what the room looked like this morning. As you can see, it gets morning sun, very pleasant to wake up to.

I’m so glad you are feeling better! I’m taking my cues from your doctor’s advice! Thank you!
As I slowly recover from a fractured patella, I've been told that walking and biking (stationary bike in my case), even if a bit painful, will not damage your knee as long as you keep everything aligned. But pivoting or tripping or slipping are a very bad idea!
