Daily Diary, Day 675:
Family’s last day here. They have an evening flight (but will need to leave for the airport around 5) so everyone taking it slowly this morning. Daughter and oldest grandson are off to Ocean Beach for last chance at the water, youngest grandson is upstairs doing some sort of video game. Husband is off walking the dog, and I’m taking advantage of the quiet to read a bit and do this post.
I have a noon Zoom meeting, and soon after that there will be a flurry of packing and I will start to do some laundry, which will also help me discover if anything has been forgotten in the packing before they take off.
I have been using the fact that most days I haven’t had time to get in my morning walks to do some gardening. Grandsons helped once, but then decided not very much fun. Since I tend to agree, I didn’t mind them not helping the rest of the week. However, I kept at it and in ten minute intervals before the sun came out in the morning, I did some cleaning out of weeds, made a rock stream bed, and today I set up a bird bath.
It was a solar powered bird bath at one point, decades ago, but the pump broke. Then for about 5 years we used it as a bird feeder, but that attracted a squirrel family. We loved that, little babies frolicking in the upper yard for years, until we learned a neighbor put out poison, because they feared the squirrels might have rabies. So, no more bird feeders for us.
It has been sitting every since in the back yard, looking sad. Today I cleaned it up (the top had some old wasp nests in it so that got tossed) and put it out in the front garden I where I had been working. Now I hope some birds find it. There are lots of bees in the lavender around it, does anyone know if bees need water?
I do love recycling things like this.
Two things. Squirrels more likely to have Yersinia pestis than rabies. Bees like trickling water (safer to access.)
Love this post, dear Sister. Trust that you had some wonderful memory making times with your family.
I loved your comment about "agreeing with him about gardening not necessarily being that much fun"! I tend to get overwhelmed walking by seeing all, all, all that needs to be done. Then if I can get in the habit of just 20-30 minutes a day, I feel so much better as I see the progress being made!
