Daily Diary, Day 680: Posting late because I’ve been watching the Jan 6th Hearings. Again, wow.
Meanwhile, I am continuing to read other works in the Paradisi Chronicles series, finding characters and events I might want to reference in my own stories. Also beginning to take notes on possible story lines. In short, very much in the early stage of thinking about a new story. I’ve written a lot about this process for coming up with one of my Victorian mystery plots, and there are some similarities for the science fiction plotting. However, a big difference is that I have a lot of confidence in my historical expertise, when it comes to science fiction…not so much.
For example, in last week’s visit, my grandson (age 12) was very interested in understanding what the Higgs Boson particle was, and what was happening with the Hadron Collider. He even listened to a Ted Talk on it. We get a weekly news magazine called Science News that happened to have an article on this very topic this week. I slowly read through it, but I didn’t understand but a tenth of what I read! Thankfully, my science fiction stories don’t require me to understand physics.
What I do feel more confidence in, is my understanding of people and social/political/economic structures. Therefore, my goal is to figure out how these would work in a relatively new colony with sentient animals and the existence of physic abilities, weaving in just enough science to sound like I know what I am talking about (smile.)
Here is a photo from my walk this morning (got up to 60 mins). If you look very carefully, you can see a monarch butterfly on the blooms.
A link to a good (nearly TL:DR) article. https://interestingengineering.com/physics-101-higgs-boson-and-higgs-field
Perfect ... it's the reference I'd planned also to bring out for the grandkids if the topic arose. That, and fly-fishing and knot-tying and drone-flying; I figure that's lots for Grampa.😄
