Friday, October 6, 2023: Recommendations
Daily Diary, Day 1131: Brief check-in: Definitely got warm enough yesterday for A/C, and looks like it will be the same today. As a result, having already spent an hour cleaning the upstairs, I skilled walk, but may try to do a slightly longer one this evening after dinner, if it has started to cool down. Tomorrow another hot one, maybe a little cooler on Sunday, then definitely more normal temperatures in 70s starting Tuesday. As I predicted, got only slightly more than 200 words written yesterday, but I have already gotten 400 words written this morning, and I have a couple more hours to work before exercise and lunch.
Now on to what I’ve been doing to entertain myself and can therefore recommend.
TV watching:
Finished the third season of Reservation Dogs, and what a winner, I highly recommend the whol series. I know we will rewatch all three seasons. Also finished watching Only Murders in the Building, and the cliff-hanger at the end signals that they have already contracted for a season 4, which pleases me. We have continued to watch episodes of the new show Mrs. Sidhu Investigates as they come out, perfect for nights when we want something gentle.
We have been slowly rewatching Lewis (we never really got into Morse) and enjoying it, once again something we watched before, but don’t ever remember who dunnit. Like Sidhu, good puzzles, not much graphic violence, and we like the dynamics between the two main protagonists. Also watching Abbot Elementary when there is a little time before bed. Almost done with the first season. I am finding it charming.
I think I wrote in one of my daily posts, that I definitely do not recommend You, Me, and the Apocalypse, which started out amusing but ended up very disappointing. Generally, I am going to only mentioning positive recommendations, but since my first mention of this was positive, I wanted to make sure that wasn’t the impression I left you with.
Listening:
Finished a Carl Hiaasen audiobook, Tourist Season. A very high body count, but amusing as ever, and now I am listening to the first Thomas Perry, The Vanishing Act, a Jane Whitefield mystery, which I probably read at least 20 years ago, so I don’t remember the plot, at all. But keeping me intrigued.
I am still listening to A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs and just listened to an episode on A Hard Day’s Night. Saw the movie when it came out, loved it. Felt like it was as close as I was ever going to get to being one of those girls who went to their concerts and screamed in real life. I was 14 at the time, and I had established that the Beatle I liked best was George Harrison. This was a matter of much debate among my friends. There was something so innocent about those days.
Reading:
I am currently reading a huge anthology with the title The Big Book of Cyberpunk. I think something like a hundred short stories in the cyberpunk genre (I am a big fan of William Gibson). So far, I’m enjoying, but reading at night, this might very well take me a year to get through! But, just downloaded the most recent Kris Rusch Diving Universe novel, and in a week or so the newest Foreigner series novel by C J Cheryh is coming out. Two of my all-time favorite science fiction authors and series. Oh my. I used to save reading new books like these two for when I got a cold, but I’m being so good about masking and staying out of risky public spaces that I haven’t had a cold in over three years. I may just have to suspend my work for a couple of days and read straight through.
And here as a little shameless promotion. I wanted to show you all this because I spent a little of the money I have raised from my paid subscriptions for a professional designer come up with this graphic. A good reminder that this first book in my Caelestis series is Free in most retailers.
