Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully. Occasionally, I will also publish some of my shorter fiction in this newsletter to read for free.
Daily Diary, Day 1654:
Yesterday was another lovely rainy morning. We were woken up about 5:30 with rain coming from the west (the ocean) and being pelted against the back of the house. The strength of the rain lasted for about 15 minutes before becoming the more familiar light rain/drizzle we usually get, but this was long enough to cause water to leak through the back door that leads to the laundry room. Since we had put down towels for just this sort of problem as soon as rain was predicted several days ago, this wasn’t a problem. The towels were sodden, but the floor is linoleum and not harmed. Since this only happens when the rain is hard and blown horizontal coming from the west (very rare), the dry towels I replaced the wet ones with remained dry, although it rained most of the morning.
What was not expected was the leak in the kitchen, where evidently the horizontal rain hitting the back wall and the overhang over the bay window behind the kitchen sink caused water to run find a crack and the leak through the wood molding and splatter down on the quartz counter tops. This was new, easily sopped up, we just hope that next week, which is supposed to be sunny, will dry the woodwork out sufficiently to prevent wood rot or mold. Ah the joys of home ownership (smile.)
Anyway, the rest of the morning was generally a heavy drizzle, which occasionally came down hard, and by yesterday afternoon there was blue sky, big puffy clouds, and very strong winds. Lovely weather for my one walk for the day before dinner.
I also did 15 minutes on the recumbent bike in the morning. Otherwise, between two phone calls and my usual noon zoom meeting, the day went by pretty quickly, without any time for plotting.
Today, there should be a little more time for work. I do have two phone calls, and I hope to get in a walk this morning, since the next storm isn’t supposed to hit us until 11.
However, just as my husband came in from his first walk with the dog, he said he’d felt a few drops. I looked from where I am sitting in the living room, writing this on my laptop, towards the back yard to see if it looked like we were in for more than a little mist, and lo and behold I saw a rainbow.
So, while I had planned on just showing you these next two photos, one shot of the sunset last night, the other from the moon set this morning.

I also now have a glorious shot of the rainbow, and if you look closely, you will see there is a faint second rainbow above it.
