Daily Diary, Day 1256:
Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Brief check-in: I surprised myself by getting 572 words written yesterday. The weather has continued to be blustery with intermittent and sun and rain showers. Yesterday my poor husband got rained on during all three walks with the dog. This morning is the same, right now it is drizzling in the front, but out the back yard, there is this wonderful rainbow across the horizon. As you all know, I appreciate any variety in the weather.
And now on to what I’ve been doing to entertain myself these past two weeks:
TV watching:
We have continued to watch the weekly episodes of True Detective (creepier and creepier) and Monsieur Spade, (a little confusing, but certainly enjoyable.) We also have continued to watch the weekly episodes of Graham Norton, and started watching the weekly episodes of a murder mystery set on a cruise ship called Death and Other Details, which is on Hulu.
Because all these shows are only coming out weekly, we have been looking for shows that are all available to watch and found Will Trent, a police procedural.
We finished season two of Astrid, and are now on season three, and this is the one I really recommend you all try. Often leaves me with a tear in my eye, just because of my growing affection for the characters and the pleasure of watching them together. All three seasons are on Amazon Prime.
We have also started rewatching Foyle’s War. It’s been long enough since we’ve watched it that we are not remembering who did it, but I confess, watching it when there is so much war in the daily news does provide a different, and not all that jolly, perspective. We have also started watching as our-right-before bed show, Loudermilk, and rewatching the last season of Fisk.
Listening
I finished Laurie King’s most recent book, Castle Shade, listened to Sacred Clouds by Tony Hillerman, and I am about half-way through Dorothy Sayers’ Peter Wimsey mystery, The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club.
For my podcasts, I am still listening to the weekly Situation Normal podcasts by Michael Estrin, and a couple of episodes of What Now? with Trevor Noah, and the new podcast called Talking Pictures which is interviews with directors. I’m enjoying the mix, with just music. At night, as I do my ten minute soak of my eyes to keep away the styes, I have continued to listen to John Hiatt, really savoring the lyrics.
Reading:
I am still reading my print magazines, my newsletters, and slowly getting through the illustrated The Secret Garden, so nothing new there. I have run through my short stories on Kindle, so I do need to come up with something else for my right before bed reading.

I happened across audiobooks by Anne Hillerman. Have you read/ listened to any of them? I enjoyed the one I listened to. Same characters in a little different style.
