Friday, December 22, 2023: Newsletter Recommendations
Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1207:
Brief Check-in: Yesterday was my usual busy Thursday, with noon zoom meeting, and a phone meeting before that meeting. However, in the afternoon, I got 575 words written in the new chapter. As promised, it did rain last night, with about 30 minutes of thunder and lightning, which for San Diego is very unusual. Our dog Leeza came upstairs and hid under the bed for the duration. Compared to our last dog who was terrified of thunder (and fireworks and car doors slamming and loud noises in general), this was a calm response.
Here are some photos of the clouds on my walk last night, and the last one is from this morning with a rainbow!
Recommendations:
I didn’t quite know what to recommend this week because so many of the posts tended to be a review of the past year (since a lot of the authors were then going to sign off and not post anything until after the New Year). But then I ran across two of holiday-related posts that I found very funny.
The first is by one of my favorite humorist authors, Alex Dobrenko. I haven’t recommended his newsletter, Both Are True, before now because I suspect his humor is an acquired taste. However, I did feel the need to share this most recent post, not only because I identified so much with his anxiety over getting other people presents, but because I really did like the suggestion of presents that didn’t cost anything that he listed. So do give this post, “Don’t Buy More Shit” Gift Guide, a try.
In addition, I would also recommend any of the posts he has done that focus on his son, for example (I think my son hates me) or his parents (Hello I love you, won’t you pick up?)
The second post I am recommending was by Joyce Wadler, who I’ve featured before. This recent post detailed a hunt for a gown to wear at a New Year’s Eve Party, called How about a shroud for your Black-Tie event? I think any woman of a certain age will identify, and it really made me laugh out-loud.
