Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
Daily Diary, Day 1200:
Brief check-in: As expected, no time yesterday for writing or even full amount of exercise, but I did get a lot of little stuff off of my plate, so that this morning, as soon as I come back from my morning walk, I will start to walk.
And now on to what I’ve been doing to entertain myself these past two weeks:
TV watching:
The past two weeks our tv watching has been very steady. We are rewatching Big Bang Theory and new episodes of the talk show, Graham Norton at dinner. Then I do some more work, and about 6:30 we come together to watch TV until bedtime. These past two weeks we have been watching the first two seasons of Slow Horses, in order to then start on Season Three, which we did Wednesday night. Next, we have been rewatching Life, and, finally if there is time, we have watched the second season of Abbott Elementary or rewatching old Frazier episodes, although I think we are tiring of that.
We also having been watching the new seasons of Shetland and Midsomer Murders as episodes come out each week. In addition, we were absolutely delighted to discover that the second season of Fisk, about the quirky lawyer, and that became our right before bed watch. Finally, we will probably start watching Candice, the French police show, soon, since the new season of that just started.
Really, I can’t remember when our TV watching has been so consistent and equally enjoyed by both of us.
Listening
In my audiobook listening, I finished Pride and Prejudice, and then A Shilling for Candles, the second book in the Josephine Tey collection of her Alan Grant Mysteries. I am not sure I ever read that one. I then moved on to new a Carl Hiaasen, Squeeze Me. It is listed as the sixth in the series of books he wrote that featured the weird former governor, Skink. And I just started listening to the second Thomas Perry Jane Whitfield mysteries. Finally, I am still listening to the podcast, A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs.
Reading:
Before bed, I am now reading the holiday series of short stories that come out one a day that Kris Rusch puts together (this is the fifth year), and, except for still madly trying to keep up with my print magazines and my substack newsletters, that’s about all I have time for.
Finally, I really do want to recommend this special Smashwords sale on ebooks. Lots of great bargains!
