Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully. Occasionally, I will also publish some of my shorter fiction in this newsletter to read for free.
Daily Diary, Day 1689:
Yesterday, as with last Thursday, I took it rather easy. Daily cleaning, some laundry, putting together the monthly newsletter to go out this morning (where I announce discounts, raffle off some audiobook codes, etc.) This month I also included a link to a short cozy mystery promotion that is going on this weekend.
I’m not sure if this monthly newsletter is the source of at least 20 new subscribers today for this daily newsletter. But from wherever you came from, Welcome!
I only got in one walk yesterday because my regular mid-day noon zoom meeting lasted longer than usual. However, I did still get slightly over 500 words written, and Mr. Wong to the Rescue is now over 10,000 words…and getting closer and closer to the 15,000 words where I consider it a novella. Today I shouldn’t have any trouble getting in both walks and achieve my writing goal. Also a phone call, and the weekly grocery delivery.
I read this morning that Boston’s Old North Church and other churches throughout the country will be ringing their bells this evening to celebrate the 250th Battle of Lexington and Concord, I will be listening to see if any of our local churches do the same, because we certainly need to be reminded of the importance of letting freedom ring. Also tomorrow (Saturday April 19th) is another round of protest marches.
Meanwhile, here are photos from yesterday’s morning walk, a very interesting mix of clouds, and lots more rose bushes blooming. The yellow roses are on our one bush. I loved the way you could actually see the range from tight bud to a blossom past it’s prime.

Everything I publish in this newsletter is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for what I am writing by clicking the button below to upgrade to paid, thereby providing me more resources so I can spend more time writing my fiction and less time marketing. In addition, please do click on the heart so I know you’ve been to visit and/or share with your friends, and I always welcome comments! Thanks!
Instead of past its prime, I prefer to think that the yellow rose is preparing for its well deserved rest!
Beautiful roses! Don't forget one walk is better than nothing....
