Daily Diary, May 19, 2023, Day 990:
This was the second Friday in a row where I stepped out of my Covid era isolation, going to a retirement party for a colleague (it was outside in a park, and I stayed masked.) I retired over ten years ago, and a good number of people had retired since then and didn’t come, or been hired since I left and I didn’t know, and those who I knew who were still teaching had all turned grey! Rather shocking. Mostly I said hi to those I knew, had a long chat with one colleague and heard about his family, and then had a brief chat with a brand new hire who asked me about how I had gone about publishing after retirement. I confess I got all him excited about looking into substack. Then I came home, exhausted from the unusual degree of sociability!
Now, time to publish another character biography, and work a little more on the short story itself.
Georgie Meyer:
Georgie Meyer was born 1873, so in Dandy and the Dognappers, he will be nine, in the fifth grade. He is the son of Hetty Meyer and the grandson of Esther and Herman Stein, the older couple who helped Annie Fuller Dawson set up the boardinghouse and were her first boarders. Gerogie and his mother are featured in my latest novella, Mrs. Stein Solves a Crime.
Physical description: He is short and stocky, with light brown curly hair, dark blue eyes, and round cheeks that reddened when he gets upset. Prone to upper respiratory infections, and cosseted by his mother, he is not very athletic.
Personality: When the reader meets Georgie for the first time in Mrs. Stein Solves a Crime, he initially appears to be a rather unsympathetic character. An only child, raised in a well-to-do household, he has been over-indulged by his mother, neglected by his father, and bullied by his cousins and classmates. As a result, he is immature and indulges in temper-tantrums when he doesn’t get his way. On the other hand, the events of Mrs. Stein Solves a Crime will reveal that he is really a sweet, but sad and lonely little boy.
At the time of the new short story, Dandy and the Dognappers, Georgie will have just started attending Clement Grammar school, where the three older children from the boardinghouse have been looking out after him. He has also recently gotten a young King Charles Spaniel puppy, Belle, and glasses, both of which have helped his confidence tremendously.
