Daily Diary, Day 708: Yesterday it was hot (got up to 87) and humid and oppressive, and I found it increasingly difficult to work. Nevertheless, I kept at it, and despite several phone calls, by dinner I had gotten 1065 words written.
Suddenly after dinner, I noticed a change in the nature of the light in the house...that sort of eerie storm's a coming light. I went to look out the front, and there was this huge black cloud to the east of us. I went online and saw there were flash flood warning for the desert and mountains to the east of us. Out back (photo below) you could see a bit of this front, highlighted by the sun set.
Then, as we watched TV, I could feel a breeze and that distinct smell of rain on concrete. We went outside and it was spitting these large intermittent drops. Eventually enough rain fell to make the streets wet, (our local weather station just a few blocks away registered no precipitation!) but a friend who lives only a mile east of us texted and said where she lived it was pouring!
Even if we didn't get that level of rain, it did certainly cool things off...but the humidity made the first part of the night pretty uncomfortable.
I always feel I need to apologize when I go on and on about weather. Having grown up in Pennsylvania, I know that having a summer day be hot and humid, or having storm move in, drop a little rain, was such a common occurrence that I probably didn't even notice. But here...any deviation...seems worthy of note!
We are rewatching Studio 60, by Aaron Sorkin, about a Saturday Night Live type show, and thoroughly enjoying it. Topping the nigh off with rewatching The Detectorists, probably one of our favorite quirky British shows. I strongly recommend both.
Now, while still very hot and humid today, going to try to get more like 1500 words written. Also hope to find about an hour to write up another Historical Tidbits piece for tomorrow. Wish me luck!
