Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, , Day 1463:
This is another one of the posts that I’m calling Short Stuff, which is going to be primarily a recap of the last couple of days. Once again, in case you missed it, I am starting to intersperse these shorter posts with slightly longer ones each week. The weekly Sunday Tada! List posts will now alternate with a post I am calling, A Small Moment of Delight. In addition, for the next month or so I am going to be putting up posts on Tuesdays and Thursdays where I publish scene by scene another short story, this one in my Caelestis science fiction series. Yesterday I published the first of several posts providing background on the origins of Aelwyd.
Otherwise, the major item to share is that my editing is definitely going well. Between Monday and Tuesday, I cut over 1500 words.
This week we are having what passes for a heat wave in San Diego. Fortunately because we live relatively close to the coast, there was fog last night (just now burning off) and yesterday there was a steady breeze most of the day. That means the official peak temp in our neighborhood 82 degrees, although our backyard thermostat in the afternoon was well in the 90s. We definitely turned the air conditioner on after lunch, and today it’s supposed to be even hotter.
I’ve already done yoga and my regular cleaning and my first walk, so this means I have already hit my goal of 90 minutes of exercise for today. Which between you and me probably means I will skip the second walk given the heat. Otherwise, this should be another delightful day where I have no phone calls scheduled, so lots of editing before me. Yesterday, one of the reasons I was able to get so much edited was that the only phone call I had was at five, after I had put away the manuscript. A good thing, since the call was with one of my oldest friends and lasted well over two hours!
I’m going to leave you with a simply glorious red rose from a walk last week. Otherwise, I noticed as I walked today, everything is a bit droopy because of the heat, so no pictures.
