Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1491:
I had an amazing day of writing yesterday. I wrote over 1700 words and finished the climax chapter (there is still an epilogue to go.)
This often happens when I get towards the end of a book, I am both motivated to finish, and often I have been thinking about this ending throughout writing the whole book, so it comes pretty quickly.
Reminded me that I wrote my climax chapter for Maids of Misfortune, my first Victorian San Francisco mystery book, in 1988, while taking a novel writing class. The professor asked us to write the end of our novel first as an assignment. While between 1989 when I completed the draft and 2009 when I finally published it, a lot of the book changed, that climax chapter was pretty much as I first wrote it!
Anyway, while I am sure the writing I did yesterday needs editing, I plan on forging ahead on the epilogue today, see if I can get the whole draft done by this weekend before going back to look at it.
I must say that neither of my hands were entirely happy by bed time, so I did end up taking some advil around midnight. But the aches and pains were worth getting that chapter done!
I didn’t have any phone calls yesterday, which helped. Today I’ve already done a walk (and a phone call) and now I am waiting for the repair person to finish installing the new part in the fridge. Then, I can get to work.
Here are some more Halloween decorations. I noticed last year a huge proliferation of skeletons in yards, this year they seem to be the first to appear.
