Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1466:
Our neighborhood weather station, which is just a couple blocks away from us, registered at its peak yesterday 98.4°! As far as I know, it’s never gotten that high in the neighborhood before. My friend came over yesterday and by the time we left the back patio at 10:30 it was already really too hot to stay out anymore, even in the shade. It was so nice that when we walked into the house where my husband had already turned on the AC. Since I had already done my exercise for the day, I didn’t have to go outside again and so the day inside at a nice cool 75 degrees was very pleasant. I did get some more editing done, finishing one very long chapter and starting another.
Today, it is supposed to be even hotter. I’ve completed my other extensive weekly cleaning this time downstairs, and was already feeling the heat. I felt I had to do a particularly good cleaning today because we’ve started seeing ant scouts in various parts of the house, and this morning I found five on the counter. I think they were coming in from one of the windowsills, but this time of year there are all sorts of places the often enter, so making sure I keep everything clean and there aren’t little bits and pieces of dog kibble or anything lying in corners is important.
However, between well over an hour of cleaning, and my 30 minute walk, I think I am done exercising for the day. We will probably turn the air conditioner on as soon as my husband gets home from his second dog walk.
Otherwise, besides having to put away the groceries when they are delivered, I don’t have anything else scheduled, so I shouldn’t have any trouble getting a fair amount of editing done again today.
I noticed this morning, with the sun already shining so brightly, this particular rose bloom simply seemed to glow.
