Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1475:
Well, I had another good week of editing last week. However, as I expected, as I get towards the end of the draft, I have cutting less and added more, so by the end of the week I had 21 more words in the manuscript than I started out the week. The reason for this is as I hit this last section, I started running into plot threads that I felt I had developed insufficiently, so I had to go back and insert material in earlier chapters.
I only have a few more chapters this week and then it will be time to start writing the end chapters. Yesterday I got to the first chapter where I started dictating because of the hand problems. The result was very, very rough, in fact in some places incomprehensible. While there were words, and they were by in large English words, it seemed like almost every other word was not the word I had intended. Either I’ve gotten better at dictating, as I did for this post, or the dictating program on my laptop has gotten better at recognizing my speech, but back then neither were working very well. This means that the editing will probably be fairly slow over the next few days as I try to figure out what I was trying to say!!
I have enjoyed getting some comments back from my post yesterday on my small moment of delight…with people sharing what had brought them delight. Thanks and do keep the comments coming.
I’ve had my yoga, done my cleaning, and taken my first walk (where there was one block of sprinkles of rain), and then comes the play date with the border collie, probably followed by a phone call. Then back to editing.
Here are some bunnies (one photo even got one running) and dark clouds from my walk today.

Bunnies are cute, but I love your floral photos!
Good to hear that you are more comfortable with the technology to keep creating your stories! Wonderful what we can do today if we are able to learn how to use it. I enjoy reading eBooks on my cell phone that I download from the library via their Libby program. Libby also has audio books by many authors. Many from the past which I also enjoy.
