Welcome, I’m Mary Louisa Locke, the author of the USA Today best-selling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series and the Caelestis Science Fiction series. In this daily newsletter, I reflect on my life as an indie author trying to age gracefully, including my struggles to maintain a balanced life, what I listen to, read, and watch for entertainment, and occasional bits of information I’ve gleaned from doing the research for my novels.
In addition, now and again I will provide some of my fiction to read, for free, on this newsletter. Everything is available to anyone who subscribes, but I am always pleased when someone shows their appreciation for the newsletter by upgrading to paid.
Daily Diary, Day 1472:
As I expected, I didn’t have any time to work yesterday morning, but I did have a couple of hours in the afternoon. However, I didn’t get a lot of editing done, because I have now gotten to the place where I was when I first injured my fingers and the bathroom remodel had started. What that means is that the next three chapters are extremely rough. It’s clear that at a certain point, I started trying to dictate, which also means that almost every sentence needs a lot of work. But perhaps more significantly, I was having trouble getting enough time to write with remodel and becoming frustrated with my inability to work on the laptop, even to edit.
So, I am now trying to start over with these chapters, more than three months later. As a result, I spent most of yesterday afternoon reviewing what I did write, and starting to decide exactly what information I wanted to put as a flashback, what I could summarize as narrative, and what needed to be put in the form of dialogue. I hope this will mean that I am in good shape to make more progress today.
Today, I’ve done yoga, cleaned, had my first walk, and had my first skirmish with ants that found the recycle bin under the sink. We should have emptied it last night.
After I post this, I should be able to get started work, and as of right now, I don’t have any phone calls scheduled. Since tomorrow and Sunday are pretty clear as well, so I might even have a chance to get through these three chapters, which would mean next week I could start to write the new and final chapters in the book.
Another glowing pink rose that has survived the heat wave.
